Can I sell ammunition?

I was asked by a friend to buy him 6 boxes of 38 special ammunition. I paid $14. and change for the stuff. This a few bucks below normal price... I have no guns that would accept 38 spl. unless, maybe, I wrapped butcher paper around it and put in a shotgun..Can I legally sell it in Ohio? Was thinking of the local advertiser and asking $90.00 for the six boxes..That way, only out a couple of dollars. If not legal to sell,,,There should be a few good ideas and advice around here....... Going on 71,with ill wife, not about to play Clint Eastwood, or buy a gun just because I have some shells..........A friend bought a gun and dealer had no shells for it. He said, what do I do? Told him THROW IT and hope you hit hard...

I don't know why you couldn't sell ammo to a private party in Ohio, unless there are specific laws against it. But, I have never heard of this being illegal in the U.S....Maybe someone from Ohio has better information?

Why is the "friend" wanting you to buy it? Is he a felon?

In mass you cannot sell ammo unless you have a license.

I used to live in Ohio as little as two years ago and I know of absolutely NO restrictions on selling ammunition.

You can sell the guns private party with no paperwork and I have never heard of any restriction at all on buying or selling ammunition while I lived there (22 years!)

Why do you need permission?

Ohio is pretty cool.

If you are both Ohio residents, you can sell the ammo and the gun without involving anyone else.

Ammo is more complicated than transferring firearms. There may be local laws governing the sale and you may have to keep track of who the buyer is. Ammo sales to minors is also restricted. No pistol ammo unless 21, and no rifle ammo unless 18.

aimsurplus has a page about ammo sales.... you might want to consider the rules they go by. They require a copy of a photo ID and they require the buyer to state that they are not prohibited from buying ammo.

Personally, I think you should just go down to your friendly neighborhood gun shop and trade them for some ammo you can use and be done with the whole thing.

The person and I were going to go to the shooting range at Dillon. Never make plans with someone over 80.You never know when they are going to opt out big time. I can use the money, so I'll check the laws and sell. Many thanks for the input:smile:

In theory that would be the ideal thing to do to avoid any potential pitfalls with legal issues. But to play devils advocate, every shop that sells ammo that I have been to around here says ammo says are final. I am assuming that they do this so that people don't replace new ammo with reloaded ammo? I suppose the point of it is to protect consumers from buying something that may be reloaded improperly and be dangerous? I dunno...I am just speculating here, but do know that they don't take back ammo around here, even in trade.

If you have to ask strangers on a public forum, then the answer is a resounding NO!
